Several studies in India have revealed that lack of basic amenities like toilets, access to water and basic infrastructure creates an unwelcoming and non-conducive environment in government schools, leading to high rates of absenteeism, which results in children dropping out of school. It is the girl child who is affected the most by lack of such infrastructure.
SRF Foundation is a strategic partner of Coca-Cola NDTV Support My School campaign, which was launched to work on revitalization of schools. The campaign that begun with Coca-Cola, NDTV and UN-habitat has now grown to include Tetra Pak and Enrich Agro Foods. The participation and contribution of community based Philanthropists, Village Panchayat and Government has been remarkable in the overall impact. The approach adopted was to work on Sanitation PLUS model involving NGOs, Community members and Private Sector (Golden Triangle). So in addition to new or revitalized structures, access to water was made an important component apart from access to sanitation, playing facilities, environmental upkeep and Partner-led intervention.
With help of strategic partners such as SRF Foundation, Support My School has become one of the biggest campaign of its kind in India. SRF Foundation with Coca-Cola NDTV have reached 34 schools- 28 in Mewat, Haryana and 6 in Gwalior and Bind, MP under Support My School campaign. Overall Coca-Cola NDTV Support My School campaign has reached 600 schools and aims for 1000.Through active engagement and leveraging various channels and through clutter breaking Live Television telethon, campaign reached out to millions and making them aware of the issue and also how together it can be solved. The campaign has ignited a spirit of partnership in resolving this pressing issue of lack of sanitation, water and dilapidated schools.
Taking a leaf out of the book, Tapkan Village Panchayat donated land while SRF Foundation and CARE India pooled in resources which resulted in a new building for UDAAN -an 11 month special training, free residential Program for adolescent girls who have either dropped out or have never been to school. Such has been an impact of Support My School campaignwhere people come forward with their support and facilitate change.
